15 What is a Food Manager Certificate? Why do I need one?

6 to 12 million Americans contract food-borne illnesses each year. These illnesses can be prevented by ensuring that those who handle food are properly educated about how to do so. Such education is offered through a food safety training program by an accrediting agency.
A Food Manager Certificate is awarded at the completion of such a program. Receipt of this certificate indicates understanding about the proper handling of food according to national standards. Many states require that individuals who handle food complete such training in an effort to prevent the spread of food-borne illnesses.
Effective May 11, 2014, the 2014 Delaware Food Code requires that the person in charge of a food business be certified through an accredited food protection manager certification program. The Division of Public Health is offering Delaware establishments a 1-year grace period beyond the effective date of the new code to meet this requirement.
